Course Introduction

Welcome to ICAN!’s Providing Patient Centered Reproductive Support & Care! This program is intended to equip Community Health Workers (CHWs), doulas, and certified nurse midwives to:

  • Apply Reproductive Justice-informed techniques to screen clients for their reproductive well-being using a TRUER (Trauma-informed, Respectful, Unconscious Bias Aware, Evidence-based, and Reproductive well-being centered) care approach.
  • Educate clients on coverage options for people of reproductive age with emphasis on Illinois’ new alternative Medicaid program that expands coverage for family planning and related services.
  • Develop service coordination skills to connect community members to person-centered sexual and reproductive health services and coverage including their preferred birth control.

Session 1: Modern Contraception and Reproductive Justice

Learning Objectives:

  1. Align the Reproductive Justice framework with TRUER contraceptive care delivery.
  2. Identify one screening question used to screen clients for contraceptive needs and desires.
  3. Educate on the range of contraceptive methods available in the US and understand how patient preference and values guide person-centered counseling and shared decision-making.

  3. Review our Birth Control Methods Chart.

Recommended completion: March 18th, 2025.

Modern Contraception and Reproductive Justice

This course should take around 60 minutes to complete, and is broken up into brief video/quiz pairs that you can move through at your own pace.

Comparison chart for all birth control methods, that can be printed and provided to patients. Available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Urdu, French, Polish, and Simplified Chinese .

Session 2: Routine Screening for Reproductive Well-Being

Learning objectives:

  1. Integrate routine screening for reproductive well-being into your routine workflow, including assessing clients for birth control, preconception, STI, and HIV care needs.
  2. Practice patient centered communication to strengthen TRUER care delivery.
  3. Dispel myths and misperceptions on birth control.
  4. Apply available tools to strengthen reproductive well-being screening, counseling and referrals.

Assignments:

Session 3: The HFS Family Planning Program

Learning objectives:

  1. Educate clients on eligibility and services covered under Illinois’ new HFS Family Planning program.
  2. Inform clients of immediate, temporary coverage options available to any age, gender or immigration status.
  3. Connect clients to providers offering immediate coverage enrollment.

Session 4: Leveraging Medicaid to Advance Reproductive Well-Being

Learning objectives:

  1. Maximize Medicaid coverage for all people of reproductive age, including new coverage for non-pregnant people of any age, gender or immigration status.
  2. Promote continued care and coverage for clients rolling off of Moms and Babies through integrating routine screening for reproductive well being and education on Medicaid programs.
  3. Identify person centered counseling practices with special considerations for selecting and accessing a no-cost a method in the postpartum period.

Session 5: Connecting Communities to Sexual and Reproductive Health Care and Coverage

Learning objectives:

  • Strengthen understanding of Reproductive Justice and contraceptive equity.
  • Connect clients to low or no cost sexual and reproductive health services.

Asynchronous training available in June.

Session 6: The Path Ahead-Applying Learnings To Improve Reproductive Well-Being For Your Community

Learning objectives:

  • Integrate and apply learnings to finalize an Action Plan for your clients and community.
  • Elevate and resolve questions and barriers to applying your Action Plan and learnings.
  • Identify trusted resources to access future trainings, education, and outreach materials.
